Calgary Economic Development targeting Ireland and Scotland for potential workers
CALGARY ` Calgary Economic Development is reaching out to Ireland and Scotland to attract potential workers to the city, the Herald has learned.
Mary Moran, vice-president of marketing and communications for CED, said the organization for the first time will be launching its Be Part of the Energy campaign internationally in the fall.
`Where we`re spending most of our attention and effort is around our Ireland and Scotland people attraction mission which includes job fairs. We`re in the recruitment process right now of getting companies on board,` said Moran.
Sixty-one years ago, a lowly Calgary employee of U.S. multinational Sun Oil Co. wrote a subversive letter to the company brass in Philadelphia.
The message spit in the eye of his local managers in Alberta.
`I have long felt that our company should take a permit to explore for oil from the Tar Sands of Alberta,` 30-year-old Ned Gilbert wrote in September, 1951, in defiance of his immediate superiors, who opposed the idea of going any further than their first tentative steps in the area.
Canadian oil: A good chance for rollercoaster fans
It has been among the most important uncertainties facing Canada`s energy industry, which has faced dramatically different views on whether Canadian oil is set for a big comeback, or mired in years of dismal pricing.
How about both? And how about both in just a week`s time?
After a terrible spring, Canadian oil traded for September delivery had quietly staged a huge rally. In the past few weeks, culminating on Monday, the synthetic crude oil that comes from oil sands operations equipped with pre-refinery-like `upgraders` sold for as much as $8 (U.S.) a barrel above the North American benchmark West Texas Intermediate.
CALGARY ` On a cool and rainy day in Calgary, five busloads of potential residential real estate investors embarked Friday on a tour of the area to check out the market.
`About 60 per cent of them are not from Calgary,` said Don Campbell, president of the Real Estate Investment Network in Canada, which organized the tour. `It`s a really good mix everywhere from Halifax to the United States to Victoria.`
The residential market cycle is performing exactly as a real estate market is supposed to do, he said.
VANCOUVER ` Whether they`re crossing the border into the United States or heading west to the British Columbia coast, the controversial pipelines linked to the Alberta oil sands have one purpose: to get the thick, heavy bitumen out of the country.
But Enbridge`s (TSX:ENB) Northern Gateway and TransCanada`s (TSX:TRP) Keystone XL pipelines, which have been fighting for the approval of governments, regulatory agencies and the public, have renewed a debate over whether Canada should be refining the raw bitumen at home instead of exporting it to be refined farther afield.

$1.5 billion Hinton coal mine planned to fuel Asian power plants
EDMONTON - A proposed coal mine on Hinton`s doorstep could cost $1.5 billion if fully developed and bring more than 500 new jobs to the town.
Coalspur Mines` Vista Coal Project would be Alberta`s largest export coal mine, shipping up to 12 million tonnes of thermal coal a year to Asia to fuel electrical power plants. The nearby Canadian National rail line would be used to ship coal to Prince Rupert where it would be loaded onto ships at the Ridley terminal.
CALGARY ` A lack of supply and continued demand for downtown office space is pushing rents upward in the Calgary commercial real estate market as they move closer to peak levels of 2007.
`If you look at today`s rates, everybody`s going `oh, the market`s so tight, it`s hot.` Yeah, but we`re still not at the peak of 2007,` said Greg Kwong, executive vice-president and regional managing director for CBRE Limited in Calgary.
Calgary housing market among Canada's most affordable
CALGARY ` The Calgary-area housing market remains one of the most affordable in Canada, according to a report released today by RBC Economics Research.
The latest Housing Trends and Affordability Report said the local market has enjoyed the best of all worlds recently: stronger home resales and home building, moderately rising prices, and attractive and improving affordability.
`That great national dream ` the development of northern resources ` no longer sleeps. It is not down the road. It is happening now.`
Prime Minister Stephen Harper`s bullish views on the North ` which he outlined again last week, during his annual summer northern trek ` sets the stage for a key coming event in Edmonton.
About 400 political and business leaders are gearing up for the 2012 Meet The North conference in about five weeks` time. The event will take place at the Marriott River Cree Resort Oct. 3-5.
Observers say Canada unlikely to build west coast refinery any time soon

Calgary house price gain among the lowest in Canada
CALGARY ` A national report on repeat home sales says Calgary experienced one of the lowest year-over-year gains in prices in July.
The Teranet-National Bank National Composite House Price Index, released Wednesday, said prices in Calgary were up 1.1 per cent from July 2011 but nationally, in 11 major markets covered by the survey, prices jumped by 4.8 per cent.
CALGARY ` Job gains, population growth, and low interest rates will support condominium demand in Calgary, says a national report released Thursday.
And the city is the most affordable among the top eight large metropolitan areas when analyzed relative to local incomes.
`A balanced resale market is expected this year, with moderate sales increases and resumed price growth. Falling unsold builder stocks will help lift starts in 2012, before they drop in 2013,` said the Metropolitan Condo Outlook by Genworth Canada in conjunction with the Conference Board of Canada.
