OTTAWA - There is a significant risk that the Group of Seven major industrial countries, which include Canada, will sink into the worst recession since the 1930s Depression, a major Canadian bank warned Friday.
The Canadian economy will "formally slip into a recession at the end of this year," TD Bank forecast, adding its name to a growing list of financial institutions projecting a downturn.
The stock market is down. The dollar is down. Are consumers, too, going to hunker down and stop spending as the crucial holiday season gets into gear?
Maybe not.
Even as the doom-and-gloom news continues to flow, particularly from the United States, there are many in Canada who feel things -- for now, at least -- are just fine, and Christmas and Christmas spending will go ahead pretty much as usual -- unless we somehow get spooked.
Australian house prices slow; retail, job ads fall
CANBERRA, Australia – Australian house prices rose at their slowest pace in almost three years, September retail sales slid and job advertisements fell for a sixth consecutive month in new evidence Monday that the economy is slowing.
House prices in state capitals fell by 1.8 per cent on average in the three months to September for an annual growth rate of just 2.8 per cent, the latest Australian Bureau of Statistic`s house price index shows.
Radical reforms may be in store for Canada`s duty-free shops, as Ottawa plans to strip away regulations and inject more competition into the lucrative sector.
Among the proposed changes are so-called "arrivals duty-free shops," at which a traveller coming into Canada could purchase cheap booze, cigarettes and other tax- exempt goods at the end of an international journey rather than the start, as is now the case.
OTTAWA -- The Canadian economy is slowing but will keep on growing, a major think-tank forecast Monday.
It will manage to skirt a recession, the Conference Board of Canada predicted in a downwardly revised -- but still relatively optimistic -- forecast issued in the wake of recent separate warnings by a growing number of forecasters that Canada will in fact be pulled into a recession by the downturn in the U.S. and global economy.
The forecast also came as the European Commission was throwing in the towel and declaring that the 15-nation euro-zone was likely in a technical recession, usually defined as back-to-back quarterly contractions in output.
Don`t balk, a case can be made for variable-rate mortgages
Once the darling of savvy homeowners, the variable-rate mortgage has become a nasty piece of business lately.
Rates for these mortgages are vastly more expensive than they used to be, and some lenders are charging a fair bit more than others. It`s probably best to avoid variable-rate mortgages altogether for the time being, right?
Not so fast. There`s a case to be made for variable-rate mortgages right now, even if homeowners are shunning them.
Obama`s win signals a larger role for Canada in managing North America
Tuesday`s historic changing of the guard in Washington D.C., sets the stage for a realignment of the world`s closest bilateral relationship.
During his campaign, Barack Obama pledged to lead a more diplomatic and multilateralist U.S. Which suggests Americans may consult Canada more often on foreign and continental policy.
Shipping between China, Canada set to rise: report
HONG KONG -Amid woeful times for the global container industry, a new report predicts container volumes from the Far East to Canada will increase by almost two thirds in the next three years. The findings, published this week by a group led by Industry Canada, are in stark contrast to much of the recent news out of the container shipping sector, where ports and shipping companies alike are reporting a dramatic downturn in their business.
OTTAWA–Statistics Canada says municipalities issued $6.5 billion in building permits in September, 13.4 per cent more than in August.
Coming on the heels of an 11.7 per cent decline in August, September`s increase was the result of gains in all three components of the non-residential sector.
The agency reports the value of building permits increased in seven provinces and two territories.
Just toss those capital losses to your spouse, she`ll love you for it
You`ve got to love the last quarter of the year. Well, I do anyway. You see, my birthday is in mid-November. And, my wife Carolyn`s birthday also falls in the last quarter of the year. On top of that, there`s still time in the year to get creative about tax planning. So, this year I decided to combine Carolyn`s birthday with some creative tax planning.
How so? For her birthday, I gave her the capital losses on one of the worst-performing stocks in my portfolio. That`s right, I actually transferred the capital loss from me to her. The end result? We`re going to save thousands in tax (I`ll get to the details in a minute).
No sooner was Barack Obama declared the president-elect did the fear mongering begin. It didn`t take long for the P-word to emerge--protectionism --and what his election means in the context of the Canada-U. S. trade relationship. Even though Obama did raise the spectre of reopening the North American Free Trade Agreement during the campaign, reality is going to dictate a different course.
OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says new houses cost 2.1 per cent more in September than they did a year earlier, but that increase was lower than the 2.3 per cent rise recorded in August.
The agency says St. John`s and Regina had the largest year-over-year increases at 22.7 per cent, although there was no monthly increase at all in September in either city.
Canada now ranks No. 2 in the world`s most respected country brands, according to an U.S.-based group`s annual country brand index (CBI).
The 2008 CBI will be officially released today at a ceremony in London. Canada trails only Australia in the ranking system, which is based on the countries` travel and tourism industries.
OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper and country`s premiers agreed Monday that investment in the country`s infrastructure is the best and fastest way to use public funds to help Canada avoid the worst of a global economic recession.
"We all agreed that we should see infrastructure spending accelerated," Harper said at the conclusion of an afternoon meeting billed as the first of a series of first ministers "workshops" on the economy. "Today was a very preliminary discussion on a wide range of issues."
OTTAWA - Judy Ann Craig, a former realtor with a golden touch for gardening, will try to convince the Supreme Court of Canada on Thursday that being forced to forfeit her North Vancouver home for running a marijuana grow-op is extreme punishment for her crime.
Craig is one of three Canadians -- two from B.C. and one from Quebec -- challenging the seizure of homes in which they grew pot, a penalty that is increasingly levied following changes six years ago to federal drug laws. The 58-year-old horticulturalist contends that running a small-scale operation, mainly in her basement, should not warrant the same harsh penalties imposed for large, sophisticated businesses controlled by organized crime.
HONG KONG - Canadian Bruce Hicks says it is hard to quantify the bottomline impact to his Hong Kong-based environmental consultancy business from China`s economic stimulus package.
His three-year old firm TPIZ Resources Ltd. advises on Chinese government projects and helps owners of commercial and industrial facilities in South China with a range of issues from energy management to green factory design. It could be the sort of business that benefits from Beijing`s plan to spend 4-trillion yuan (US$586- million) on a whole series of building works including environmental projects as well as transport upgrades, newdams, public housing and more.
I have been watching for the IMF report that was presented at the sessions this weekend in Edmonton.
I`m new to this website and am uncertain about where and when they should appear.
Can you give me a bit of instruction?
