Tenants moved into newly painted basement suite with brand new carpet 3 years ago. Now they are moving out. I did walk through and discovered that they cut into the carpet - about 2 ft (probably to run some cables) and carpet is now damaged. I was not planning to charge for cleaning the carpet, but how do I repair the cut? I really do not want to use duck tape - does anyone know of some double sided tape that can hold carpet together? Any carpet cleaning company that can fix this? And how much is reasonable to deduct from the security deposit for this type of damage?
Minimum Carpet repair is $150 for carpet installers in Calgary. If there is a missing piece and pattern, It will take more time to repair, unless you have extra carpet from initial installation it is usually not possible to fix. Also consider the fact that it will show the color differences. If it is only a cut it can be easily fixed by a seam tape underneath the carpet using seam iron. Minimum cost is $150-200.
If you can, take the piece of carpet to a wholesaler and find a piece similar to the carpet that you have now. Alot of these places have end-rolls (waste pieces for them) that they cannot sell in quantity to public. Bargain with them, depending on how much you need, you should be able to pick it up for dirt cheap. Then you can get some double sided tape at Rona or Home Depot and fix it up. I know it is not the most ideal solution. But considering that it is a rental unit, you dont wanna go through all the expenses of having it done professionally. And you can charge the tenants for labour and materials.
