Hello,

I currently own and self-manage a few rental properties and would like to start a Property Management business in my area(Ontario). Currently there is only 2, so I think I can carve out a small niche for myself. My question is whether it is required or not to have some formal certification, and if so, where would be an accredited source for this?

My brother in BC has had his share of property managers dealing with his properties, and 8 out of 10 in the area(Prince George) are not certified. I am not against being certified, but would rather get the business up and running and take the courses along the way, once I have some income from it to put into the business.

Thank you for your help.

You do not need to be certified to manage residential rentals in Ontario

Condo`s are different

You can get certification through REIC <ie ARM or CPM> and a seperate one through IHM (generally public housing types have this) through courses at Humber college.

You`ll find that many residential property managers at smaller firms do NOT have certifications. You`ll find most clients baffled at any discussion of this and having a designation seems to be about as useful marketing your services as advertising that you own a telephone.
This might help your advancement as an employee at a larger PM firm though.

Also knowledge never hurts.
