Makes sense.

The government should not be in the bank risk reduction i.e. mortgage insurance business !

Just a side point,

CMHC produces a lot of research on the side as well, which has a benefit.

For instance I was downloading an article on neigborhood design and how the design influences traffic or foot traffic. These sort of articles are great!!

From what I have read the timelines for this are quite long ~10 years? I think the conservative government is throwing this idea out there to see what the public response is.

Devil is always in the details on how they privatize it. I personally would like to see CHMC's mandate and role reduced rather then outright privatization.

If CMHC makes a profit why wouldn't the government want to keep it? Why wouldn't tax payers want to keep it?

Thomas is 100% right.

CMHC should be dismantled and its employees fired. Let the banks take the risk as they should.

RBC and other banks also produce good market research. There's no reason it couldn't be a function of a private CMHC. There's also StatsCan which specifically has research and reporting as part of its mandate.

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian government

denied on Monday a media report that suggested Ottawa might partially privatize

the state-run housing agency, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

Society (CMHC).

The Globe and Mail newspaper published an interview with Finance Minister Jim

Flaherty who said the CMHC's role in the mortgage insurance business meant it

had become grander than its original mandate. He also said the government should

exit some businesses in five or 10 years.

"Despite what the Globe and Mail said, there are no plans to make that change

at this time," said Junior Finance Minister Ted Menzies.
