Congratulations to James Knull on his presentation Thursday night in Edmonton on "Doing Suited Houses the Right Way". Excellent road map for the Investor who want Edmonton secondary suites basement suites mother in law suites, etc. Hopefully the handout will be in the download section soon!
Edmonton City Council has allowed secondary suites in many neighborhoods, as they recognized the need for additional housing units and hopefully fill some of the need for safe and affordable housing. And James gave some great details on the City's Cornerstone Program, giving grants to owners to bring their units up to safety codes.
Calgary and Red Deer appear to be doing the exact opposite, no basement suites period except in new neighborhoods. Posts about the " Calgary Basement Suite Killer" have appeared in past few months. Same province, but different approaches. 8 years ago, Edmonton was the basement suite killer city and Calgary took a blind eye approach. Interesting how things change.
