Hi Folks,

I did not see any heating/air companies listed in the resources section. Any recommendations? Or should I just look through the yellow page? I have 2 properties that need service.

Cheers!

I`ve never had to deal with a furnace before. I`m curious to know what how one would know when the furnace needs to be cleaned? And how often do they need to be cleaned?

You should probably do it every two or three years or if you`ve had major or dusty renos. If there`s been a very hairy pet living in the property you would probably want to get it done. Same goes for the duct work. A furnace cleaning pays for itself with improved function and a longer service life.
You`ll also want to get your furnaces inspected every couple of years to make sure you don`t have cracked heat exchangers which can potentially lead to carbon monoxide making its way into the living quarters. Think of it as an an extra bit of liability insurance.

I use a company that does most of the Southern Ontario region for $175.00 which includes unlimited ducts, furnace cleaning and deodorizing of ductwork. It`ll prolong the life of the furnace as it won`t have to work as hard and reduce dust and overall cleaning. Most houses I find have never had them done.

For an inspection of the furnace and motor itself, you`ll need to get a licensed company to do that. Do note that if somebody like this does come in and they find carbon monoxide readings that are too high, they can shut the gas off and tag it as unsafe. Btw, it`s also a good way for them to sell you a furnace so be sure to find yourself a reputable company.

What City?

Furnace/AC should be checked seasonally. Ensure furnace filter is changed before start up. If new construction, definitely recommend duct cleaning too.

I have a really good furnace company I can recommend but I do not know where you are.

cleaning the furnace is not that important because it really does not get dirty if you replace the filter every 3 months or so, What is important though is having that inpspection prior to winter start up, ususally sept or october done EVERY year...checking the heat exchanger for cracks and the safetys of the furnace. if there is a crack in the xchanger, CO will be blown into the space and there could be some serious consequences. furnaces have safetys which shut down the furnace if something is not operating correctly, they need to be checked to make sure that they are working properly or you may have a burnt down house with roasted tenants.

not to say that a safety or xchanger cant go defective half way through the winter, but catching this early in the fall is better then catching it in the middle of january.

I use B&M Clarke in Edmontojn. They do both furnace and duct cleaning as well as carpet cleaning. Their rates are reasonable and they do a good job. I also use them to clean my dryer vents in my apartment buildings.

It should be done every couple of years.

They are a smaller family business that provides great sevice. Talk to Blane, the owner at 780-436-4645.

I have been in the Furnace / A/C business for 10 years now and would suggest that you get someone that is willing to clean the whole furnace and do a thurough inspection of the furnace aswell. The companys that claim to do the whole system that is furnace and duct work usually know little to none about the actual furnace and never inspect the heat exchanger!

Note: In Alberta, ATCO Gas will inspect ALL the location`s gas appliances for FREE!! For your annual furnace and natural gas appliance checks call for an appointment:

Calgary - (403) 245-7888
or toll free in Alberta 310-5678
- phone selection #2

I`ve done this 3 times now with my own home and some of the guys even oil your furnace motor. Follow them around and you can also get invaluable advice.
