We recently purchased a home and added a basement suite, we first looked at Ikea to get an idea of cost, then decided to try and see if we could find anything else of similar quality and look for cheaper... two full weeks of shopping, phone calls and driving all over hells half acre, we only found a couple "back door" shops who could come close, but still had to increase the price for things like the kickplates and little add ons you need to finish it off. Plus the availability of looks/styles and a 25 year warranty really sold us on it.
They even come with the quite closing drawers and you can add the quite closing doors for cheap as well.
We assembled the cabinets ourselves and had a friend in the building industry hang them, though now that I`ve helped, I wouldn`t hestitate doing it myself (with another set of hands), because Ikea provides a long metal "hanger" bar that you attach to the wall first, then hang all the cabinets off of that - super easy.
A friend of mine recently spend twice as much as I did on "custom" cabinets (custom meant custom sizing), the cabinets these days are all made of the same material and Ikea is just as strong if not better than Home Depot, Rona, Lowes, etc. In fact when we were shopping around, we showed our Ikea design specs and pricing to the guy at Home Depot and he flat out told us to just go with Ikea - "cheaper, same stuff and looks better" he told us.
It looks great and I think helped us get a "quality" tenant. Anyway, when we replace the kitchen upstairs it will also be Ikea.
One quick side note - expect to spend a bit of time assembling the cabinets - like anything else Ikea, it`s all flat pack and needs to be assembled. It wasn`t hard, it just took time. But we saw it as an opportunity... by assembling ourselves we took the opportunity to use wood glue where-ever bare wood touched bare wood and whenever there were dowels using in part of the assembly. In this way we were able to "beef-up" our kitchen a bit.
