Alberta forecasts 100,000 labour shortage





Alberta`s jobs minister says employment forecasts show that over the next decade, 96,000 jobs in the province will go unfilled due to a shortage of workers.





Kyle Fawcett says projections show that during the next 10 years, 407,000 jobs will be created but only 311,000 will be filled.

Fire at west Edmonton condo building forces 400 residents out





EDMONTON - About 400 residents were forced from their homes early Monday after fire broke out at a west Edmonton condominium complex.





Edmonton Fire Rescue responded to the four-storey building on Hammond Gate, located just off 199 Street and Lessard Road, for an alarms ringing alert at 1:30 a.m.

Albertans expect to be mortgage-free by 55





CALGARY - A new CIBC poll finds that Albertans on average expect to be mortgage-free at 55 years of age - the youngest in the country.





The poll, released Monday, said Canadians with mortgages, on average, say they will be 58 years old before they become mortgage-free.

Alberta boasts highest job vacancy rate in Canada





CALGARY - Alberta is the place to be these days for job seekers.





Not only is the province the national leader when it comes to creating new positions, but a report out Tuesday by Statistics Canada indicated Alberta has the highest job vacancy rate in the country as well as the lowest ratio of unemployed people to job vacancies.





The federal agency reported that there were 48,600 job vacancies in the province in April for a job vacancy rate of 2.4 per cent. A year ago, there were 47,400 vacancies with a vacancy rate of 2.5 per cent.

Flood-hit homeowners outraged by $18 million commitment to rebuild Kananaskis golf course





Homeowners still fighting for disaster assistance after last June`s floods say the province should be trying to get people back in their homes before putting money toward fixing the Kananaskis golf course.





On Friday, the Alberta government announced $18 million to rebuild the flood-damaged 36-hole facility in Kananaskis Country.

A Calgary single mother of three says despite submitting hundreds of applications, it took her four months to find a place for her family to live in the city.





Sharon Stevenson had been looking since April, even checking Kijiji ads by the hour, trying to find a bigger home for the growing family ` her 16-year-old daughter just had a baby.

$40 million residential development launched in Sylvan Lake





CALGARY - A $40-million master-planned residential development is being launched on Sylvan Lake`s northeastern bank area, adjacent to the Summer Village of Birchcliff.





The Slopes of Sylvan Lake, developed by Calgary`s Belterra Land Company, is the first development under the 2010 Sylvan Lake Area Structure Plan (ASP). The first stage of construction on the 49-acre property is underway, with the installation of water and sanitary lines complete. At full build out, there will be 49 homes in the community.

Calgary releases 2014 census results





Calgary ` Today, The City of Calgary released the 2014 Civic Census results for the period from April 2013 to April 2014. Calgary`s population has reached 1,195,194; this is an increase of 38,508 residents from the previous year when the Civic Census showed the city`s population was 1,156,686. This is an increase of 3.33%, similar to the level of population growth reported in 2010.





In 2014, Census data was again collected using mobile computing devices. With mobile data collection, the need for post collection data entry was eliminated and resulted in more timely and better quality data.

Calgary on the brink of 1.2 million people





`As a matter of fact, in my time in this job we`ve experienced three of our four largest years of population growth,` said Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who was first elected in 2010.





`We`re growing significantly and as a result we have to think hard about how we manage that growth and how we work together to make sure that growth is operating in the best interest of Calgarians as a whole.`

The latest municipal census shows Calgary's population went up by 3.3 per cent, or more than 38,000, in 2013.

Edmonton's rental market and low vacancy rate tough for pet owners





With one of the lowest vacancy rates in the province, finding a place to rent in Edmonton has become increasingly more challenging ` especially if you`re a pet owner.





Since January, 15.6 per cent of all pets surrendered to Edmonton`s Human Society were given up because of issues with landlords or because the owner was moving ` that`s 267 pets out of 1,717.

A decade ago, if you were flying out of Fort McMurray, you had two options - Edmonton or Calgary.

Alberta's life blood flows from Fort McMurray





FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. ­` The centre of hell ` as it might be characterized by B.C.`s environmental movement ` sits off by itself high up in northern Alberta, surrounded by nothing much more than bog and forest.





A 240-km highway connects it to the rest of the province, and we did not see a single gas station along that length ` the irony being that, despite approaching one of the world`s biggest sources of oil, one could easily run out of gas.

Calgary inner-city booming with new home construction





CALGARY - The inner-city area of Calgary is proving to be a hot market for the construction of new single-family homes this year.





According to data by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., year-to-date until the end of June, there were 204 single-detached starts in the city`s `centre` zone this year, which has increased by 35.1 per cent compared with a year ago.

High density housing OK'd in Fort Saskatchewan





A new development of five four-storey apartment buildings is on the horizon for Fort Saskatchewan.





City council approved the project with a 5-2 vote, with Coun. Arjun Randhawa and Coun. Sheldon Bossert voting against it.
