Many of us who attended the Metrolinx Open Houses earlier this month were
disappointed with the lack of attention given to reserving space for the
West Toronto Railpath (WTR). It was especially distressing to see maps and
aerial photos of the status quo which made no allusion to the current
construction project which the City has on the go north of Dundas St W.

It`s time to make your voice heard! Contact one or more of the following, and let them
know you care about this linear park:

a) Metrolinx (see below)
b) Your city councillor or other local politician
c) Local media outlets

To successfully complete WTR Phase Two (Dundas to Strachan) a corridor of
about 10m wide is required (this includes a buffer between active rail and the
path itself). At this point, Metrolinx planners do not appear to be
considering this factor in any of their sketches. We`re certainly not
opposed to expanding rail-based mass transit in this corridor, but believe
that if the community`s will is sufficient, planning solutions can be found
to accommodate both.

On a positive note, City Council did "reaffirm its strong interest" in WTR
in a motion passed Jan 28. Railpath volunteers are meeting with Metrolinx
and the City this week to explore details of land-holding and space
requirements.

Open Houses in Toronto are now wrapped up, but you still have a few weeks to
review the proposal on the web, and submit comments (by Monday, March 16).

With regards to the current construction north of Dundas St W, we were recently
informed by the City that with "good weather this spring", phase one
may be completed by mid-June. As such, we have begun tentatively planning a
ribbon cutting Saturday June 20.
