Shoddy reno work results in charges

WHITBY -- Shoddy work on a home-renovation project has led to charges against two Durham contractors. Inspections carried out after the homeowner complained about the work revealed electrical and fire hazards that included exposed live wires and overloaded receptacle boxes, Durham police said. The two contractors, identified as Seagrave residents, are facing Criminal Code and Electricity Act charges.

Oshawa`s property values jump 12.25 per cent

OSHAWA -- As a councillor representing a fast-growing ward in Oshawa, April Cullen has fielded her share of complaints about property taxes. Ward 6, the northeast pocket of Oshawa that she is responsible for, has seen tons of new development over the past few years and those pricey homes tend to come with big property assessment increases -- and big property tax bills.

City in line for worlds

London may be the centre of the figure skating universe in either 2012 or 2013.

Skate Canada chief executive William Thompson confirmed yesterday the John Labatt Centre is the leading contender when the International Skating Union world championships return to Canada.

It would be the biggest sporting event this city has undertaken. "We`ll be looking for bids from three cities, but I would absolutely say London is a very solid contender," Thompson said from Ottawa.

Project retains Port`s heritage values, developer says

Its opponents may say the Port Dalhousie tower development is bad for the heritage district, but the exact opposite is true, says the developer`s lawyer.

"The Port Dalhousie Vitalization Corp. proposal retains and strengthens the heritage values and attributes of the heritage district, " Mark Noskiewicz, PDVC`s lawyer, said Monday.

Speaking on the first day of final arguments at the Ontario Municipal Board hearing to determine the controversial development`s fate, Noskiewicz said PDVC`s architect, Michael Kirkland, and its heritage architect, Spencer Higgins, paid careful attention to the heritage of the district and concluded the project fits.

Don`t kill condo cash, developer urges

Toronto councillors risk killing the city`s cash cow if they impose crushing new fees on the housing industry, one of the city`s biggest developers warned yesterday.

Leo Del Zotto, president of Tridel Corp., said 80 per cent of the new condominiums built in the Greater Toronto Area are built in Toronto – but that could change if the city`s development charges skyrocket.

Council considers Colborne Street makeover

When it comes to the future look of Colborne Street, council committee is aiming high.

Committee agreed to have staff look at giving Colborne Street the "downtown" treatment for streetscaping. The sidewalk options are being considered as part of the reconstruction of Colborne Street from Front Street to Andrew Street scheduled for 2009.

The downtown streetscape option supported by councillors would include coach style lamps, concrete sidewalk with a paving-stone boulevard strip and trees. The end result would be similar to the treatment on the block from West Street to Andrew Street alongside Heritage Place and the City Centre.

Airport posts profit, council told

Windsor`s airport continues to turn a profit despite global economic woes, general manager Federica Nazzani told city council on Monday night.

The airport brought in a profit of $222,000 for the first nine months of this year, continuing a trend that began shortly after the city took over control of the airport in April 2007 from the former operator Serco Aviation Services.

Assessment values rise 5.6%

Dundas homes have increased in value faster than in the rest of the city.

Across the city, the average home`s assessment will increase by 5.6 per cent next year, according to figures released by the Municipal Property Assessment Corp. (MPAC). In Dundas, the average assessment increase will be 6.8 per cent.

The figures are important because they help determine residents` taxes.

City staff still eyeing arts centre

GUELPH

Planning has begun for a Guelph community arts centre.

City staff are proposing $4 million be slated for the project in the budget -- $1.5 million in 2012 and $2.5 million in 2013.

It`s still very preliminary, but listing it on the budget ensures resources are put aside to help the project along, said Ann Pappert, the city`s director of community services.

Green light for revised LRT plan

Two years ago Mayor Larry O`Brien promised to press the transit reset button.

Two years later, the city is looking at a significantly different transit project than the 30-km, north-south plan it cancelled. Yesterday, during a joint meeting of the city`s transit and transportation committee, staff tabled a recommendation for city council to move ahead with a modified version of a transit plan approved last summer.

Building bonanza

Despite the gloomy economic forecast, the city posted its strongest housing construction statistics in 20 years last month.

"Ottawa is in a very strong position," said Sandra Perez Torres, a senior analyst at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "The public sector and services in Ottawa are sustaining growth." High-density construction of row houses and condominiums drove up the number of starts to 884 units in October, 31% more than the same month last year, and year-to-date growth was also strong, at 14% over 2007, according to statistics released by CMHC yesterday.

Scugog`s $12 million plan

PORT PERRY -- An ambitious waterfront redevelopment plan has been drafted up by the municipality and Scugog is hoping that both the provincial and federal governments buy into their $12 million idea. According to a staff report that was to be addressed at Monday evening`s council session, Scugog is hoping to take advantage of the much-trumpeted `Building Canada Fund`, which will see about $6.2 billion doled out across Ontario in the near future for investments in infrastructure.

"If you wish to view only one area, you can use the advanced search mode and select the "Result Type" > "Show results as posts".

Please point me as to where I can do this. Thanks.

Boost in Merritton property values

Property values in Merritton went up more than in any other part of the city in the latest round of tax assessments.

Homeowners across St. Catharines will see an average assessment increase of 17.6 per cent over the next four years.

The assessment hike will be phased in at an average of 4.4 per cent each year until 2012.

But a detailed breakdown of the reassessment figures shows residential values in the southeastern neighbourhood of Merritton climbed by an average of 18 per cent to 19.2 per cent.

McGuinty to meet with auto execs

Premier Dalton McGuinty will meet next week with auto industry officials to discuss the "significant" bailout package he`s seeking for them from Ottawa.

Details of next week`s meeting are still being worked out, but sources said yesterday it is a top priority for McGuinty, who wants to hear what the manufacturers need to get motoring again.

North American automakers General Motors, Ford and Chrysler will be invited to the "listening meeting," along with top brass from Toyota and Honda, Japanese-based companies that also manufacture vehicles in Ontario.

Landlords OK with inspections

Toronto councillors went the "right way" by approving a crackdown on slumlords while scrapping the idea of licensing all landlords, the Greater Toronto Apartment Association says.

The group`s president said yesterday he`s "cautiously optimistic" about the city`s move to blitz 186 "bad" multi-residential apartment buildings starting Dec. 1.

"Certainly focusing on the bad buildings was what we`ve been advocating since the beginning," Brad Butt said.

Toronto firm eyes Innisfil skies

While Innisfil ponders the fate of one wind-farm proposal, another wind-energy company is looking to set up shop in the town.

A public meeting was held recently to discuss Schneider Power`s plans for a five-turbine wind farm near Line 5 and Highway 400. Innisfil town staff are expected to release their report on that proposal in the new year.

Now, a Toronto company called Sky- Power Corporation wants to rezone an area near Highway 11 and Line 14 for a meteorological tower to study wind data.
