Our daughter who has Down Syndrome whom we adopted at a year old and is currently almost four is one of the motivations behind our investment in real estate. I do not trust her future care to the state/society. When money is tight those in society who are most vulnerable may be warehoused in institutions for cost efficiency and this is not want we want for our daughter. Our motivation behind the hard work and sacrifice of RE investing is freedom for our family to have greater opportunities in life. We also have two sons who will be more than capable of looking after themselves but I do not want them shouldered with the weight of also making sure that their sister's needs are met. Some may want fancy vehicles, houses, toys but our motivations are much simpler but nonetheless powerful enough to keep us going. The RDSP is a great means for parents to provide for their adult children with special needs and not solely rely on the state. I am very Conservative in politics but have always recognized that we have individuals who cannot provide for themselves and I believe that the measure of a society can be ascertained by the way in which it treats the most vulnerable. Something that bugs me is people using the social welfare system when they are capable but lazy and seniors who complain about eating cat food when they have failed to take responsibility for themselves and save for later years. It is this entitlement mentality that has developed in our fair country that threatens legitimate social welfare for those who truly cannot provide for themselves. Shame on them.
