REGINA -- Canadian Green Fuels Inc. has received the village council`s blessings to proceed to the next phase of its plans to build a multi-million-dollar biofuel processing plant in McLean, about 40 kilometres east of Regina.

Council nixes zoning change

Saskatoon city council has scrapped a proposed new type of zoning district that would have allowed virtually every type of retail, along with restaurants, banks, clinics and residential development -- but not movie theatres.

The city has already banned theatres at shopping districts in Preston Crossing, Stonegate and Blairmore.

A resolution to approve the new zoning type lost on a 5-5 vote, with Coun. Bob Pringle absent.

At the same time, 195 single-detached homes went under construction in the Saskatoon CMA -- a region of about 240,000 people -- in May, a 3.7 per cent increase from the same starts in May 2007, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.`s monthly survey of residential construction.

Great Western Minerals Group to acquire manufacturer in U.K.

Great Western Minerals Group Ltd. (GWMG) has signed a non-binding letter of intent to acquire a United Kingdom-based manufacturer of rare earth alloys whose clients include the Toyota Group of Companies.

The $7.8-million purchase of Less Common Metals Ltd. (LCM) of Birkenhead, U.K., is expected to close on June 18, GWMG announced Monday. The Saskatoon-based company, which explores and develops strategic metal resources (including rare earth elements) in North America, says LCM will add to GWMG`s `mine to market` strategy.
