Beetle War may be lost in Alberta`s West
You know times are tough in forestry when the sustainable resource minister speaks at an industry recognition dinner and congratulates everyone for just being there.
"Everyone in this room and all (Alberta Forest Products Association) members share in your greatest achievement in these times--survival as an industry," Ted Morton said Thursday according to a copy of the state-of-the-industry speech he gave to the group`s 67th-annual meeting at Jasper Park Lodge.
"It is a credit to your perseverance that you managed to maintain softwood production in the face of market and export challenges."
Mountain pine beetles--the single biggest threat to Alberta forests-- are pushing eastward, he said.
"We are doing a good job of containing the spread of beetles in southwest Alberta, but an in-flight to our northeast this summer is cause for concern."
