Wind turbine considered for park

The City of Saskatoon is exploring its green side by studying the feasibility of erecting a wind turbine in Diefenbaker Park.

The plan calls for a single turbine, about 85 metres tall, to be located in the southeast corner of the park, adjacent to St. Henry Avenue. It is anticipated the turbine could generate enough power to service 600 homes, said Rod Neufeld, executive technical advisor for the city.

City to sell downtown lot for a dollar

A proposal to build Saskatchewan`s tallest building is a few pen strokes from approval after city council agreed to sell the police station parking lot for $1 and a promise of parking spots.

The new owner of the Fourth Avenue parking lot is Saskatchewan Housing, which is overseeing development of a mixed housing project to include condos, apartments, assisted living units, shelter beds and office and retail space.

Developers plan to build hotel at Blairmore site

After cancelling their plans to build a luxury hotel at River Landing, developers Ellen Remai and Curtis Zwack have set their sights on the west edge of the city.

Remai Zwack Ventures recently agreed to pay just more than $1.7 million for 2.678 acres of city land in Blairmore suburban centre. The company is looking to build a Best Western hotel on the property.

Sask. commodities expected to bring strong prices: report

Saskatchewan`s main commodities will continue to bring strong prices despite a downtown in the markets, a bank report said Monday.

Commodity prices retreated nearly nine per cent in August, reacting to the volatility created by the American credit crisis, the Scotiabank Commodity Price Index report said. It was the largest decline since April 2003, when an oil premium, factored into prices due to the Iraq War, eased off.

Saskatoon`s Athabasca Potash to move ahead on Burr project

Saskatoon`s Athabasca Potash Inc. can now move ahead with a pre-feasibility study on its Burr project after an updated potash resource estimate indicated 241 million tonnes of mineral resources on the property.

The company announced Monday the updated estimate, prepared by AMEC Americas Ltd., contained the indicated mineral resource estimate of 241 million tonnes in the Lower Patience Lake sub-member at a grade of 23.3 per cent K2O.
