I have decided to rent a house. A duplex for upstairs and downstairs but I am concerned about utilities. Ever since I have been renting from apartment units and some of the utilities have been covered, but for a house I have to pay for everything. The basement is especially cold, one area of the basement especially concerns me with not much insulation at all. So, can anyone give me a ball park figure for utilities cost, size 1200 sq? for 4 or 5 people? The rental landlords have been very iffy on that figure, simply claiming that it doesn`t cost much at all. Thanks everyone.

you didn`t even mention the heating system and its efficiency - gas furnace, boiler, electric heaters..?
anyway without knowing I`d guess $250/mo. on average or 3K/yr. cheers.

QUOTE (Ready4Rent @ Dec 30 2009, 05:40 AM) You can always call the hydro and gas company and get an estimate, just say you are about to rent # 123 Smith Lane.

John

Thank you so much. I`ll give them a call.

Hi

John`s answer is great...

If this doesn`t help I`d guess that in most area`s / houses investmart`s estimate is WAY off..... In SW Ontario it`d be between $900-$1500 for that small of a house...

sounds a little high for gas alone .. maybe $125 to $160/month .. maybe $200 in winter .. much less in summer ..

some municipalities charge extra for garbage .. some charge for water, too .. some include water or garbage or both in taxes (and as such, landlord pays that) ..

you could ask landlord to subsidize the first $1200 or $100/month .. doesn`t hurt to ASK .. he can say or no ..

then on top of that is electricity (hydro or nucelo .. depending on province ..) .. telephone, internet, TV ..

I disagree with housingrental...budget $3,000...$1,000-$1,500 for heat, similar for electricity, water & sewer charges and whatever the hot water rental rate is if not owned.

Sorry to clarify I was referencing the heating bill only...

Renting inclusive is a recipe for doom. It`s that simple.
