Responding to 'horror stories,' province moves to regulate home inspectors





For the biggest investment of most people`s lives, hiring a home inspector is probably one of the most important things a prudent buyer can do.








The problem in Ontario, however, is that just about anyone can advertise themselves as a home inspector. There`s currently no licensing, no mandatory training or standards and no single regulatory body overseeing those inspectors or protecting consumers.

Condo ownership up in Ottawa, but still below other Canadian cities





That`s slightly below the average for large metropolitan areas in Canada, of 17.3 per cent, but it is above the national average of 12.6 per cent.








It`s also significantly higher than on the Quebec side of the National Capital Region. In Gatineau, condos accounted for 7.9 per cent of owner-occupied households.

Investors own less than a quarter of Toronto condos: CMHC





Investors are a `strong presence` in both Toronto`s and Vancouver`s condominium markets, but exactly how strong still remains unclear, even in the wake of a new report by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.








About 23 per cent of Toronto`s condo stock was being rented out by investor-owners in 2012, the federal housing agency says in its annual Canadian Housing Observer review, released Wednesday, which places a special focus on the national condo market this year, revealing some interesting details.

GTA Commercial realtors report commercial market figures





TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Jan 6, 2014) - Toronto Real Estate Board Commercial Network Members reported a total of 5,410,687 square feet of leased industrial, commercial/retail and office space in the fourth quarter of 2013. This result was down by 8.4 per cent in comparison to the fourth quarter of 2012. The year-over-year dip in the amount of space leased was concentrated in the industrial market segment.








Approximately 77 per cent of the space leased was industrial in nature, with the office and commercial/retail segments accounting for 13 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.

Peterborough apartment vacancy rate soars





Peterborough resale housing sales and prices are expected to climb modestly in 2014 while new home starts will be fewer than last year, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.








Finding an apartment in Peterborough this year should also be easier in the coming year compared to the past few years, for those who can afford the rents.

Status quo for new home construction in London





A new forecast by Central 1 Credit Union predicts new home prices in London will increase 2 to 3 per cent annually in London through 2016, while sales during that same period will remain near 2013 levels.

Toronto home sales in December up from a year ago





TORONTO - December home sales in Toronto were up almost 14 per cent compared with a year earlier, the Toronto Real Estate Board said Monday.








The board said sales through its multiple listings service totalled 4,078 for the month, up from 3,582 in December 2012.

GTA realtors release monthly resale housing figures





TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 01/06/14 -- Greater Toronto Area REALTORSÂ reported 4,078 residential transactions through the TorontoMLS system in December 2013 - up by almost 14 per cent compared to 3,582 sales reported in December 2012. New listings entered into the TorontoMLS system were down by almost four per cent over the same period.








Total sales for calendar year 2013, at 87,111, were up by approximately two per cent compared to 85,496 transactions in calendar year 2012.

Durham region sees increased selling prices in 2013





DURHAM REGION
` The Durham Region Association of REALTORSÂ (DRAR) reported 400 sales for the month of December which brings the total sales for the year to 10,312, a decrease of 2.2 per cent from 10,549 last year.








The average price of a home in the region was $360,741 in December which brings the average price for the year to $357,529. This figure represents an increase of 6.4 per cent compared to $335,991 in 2012. `The trend for 2013 was lower sales, but higher selling prices. This is the sign of a seller's market, and we expect that trend to continue into 2014,` commented Jane Hurst, President of the Durham Region Association of REALTORSÂ.

Realtors call for home buying tax relief





TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Jan 8, 2014) -

December 2013 housing starts in KWC





TORONTO - Housing starts in the Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) were trending down at 2,106 units in December compared to 2,451 in November, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The trend is a six month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates (SAAR) 1 of housing starts.








"After reaching its highest point of the year in November the starts trend retreated slightly in the final month of 2013. Apartment starts slowed down in December, after driving the trend higher during most of the second half", said Anthony Passarelli, CMHC's Market Analyst for Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo.

Madonna plugs Toronto condos





Madonna, whose 2012 tour was the top-grossing act of the year worldwide with $296.1 million in revenue, will lead an "Addicted to Sweat" dance class next month at her Hard Candy Fitness studio inside Aura, a new 78-story condo tower in Toronto. The luxury development will also feature a sculpture- studded public gallery, a marble-lined lobby and a five-bedroom penthouse priced at C$18.4 million ($17 million).





Aura, Canada's tallest condo, is a monument to Toronto's 10-year building boom. The glass tower, with 985 apartments, is contributing to the 20,000 units set for completion in 2014, a record annual surge. And a total of 60,000 units are under construction in Toronto. Barrie jobless rate creeps up to 5.2%





Barrie's jobless rate is staying right in the 5% range.








Figures released Friday by Statistics Canada show the city's unemployment rate at 5.2% in December, up slightly from its November rate of 5.1%

Ontario loses jobs in December





Ontario added one public sector job for every two private sector jobs lost last month.








Even as the province shed a net 39,000 positions in December ` pretty much wiping out all employment gains for the year ` the public sector work force grew by 13,000 jobs over that same one-month period, the Stats Canada Labour Force Survey revealed Friday.

Chrysler in talks over renewed investment in Windsor plant





Chrysler Group LLC has begun discussions with the federal and Ontario governments to seek financial assistance for an investment of more than $1-billion to retool a plant in Windsor, Ont. for a new generation of minivans.






`This commitment that we`re making is a multibillion-dollar commitment,` chief executive of Chrysler and Fiat SpA Sergio Marchionne told reporters Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
