Protecting yourself on Private Loans

If you are providing a private loan to an investor how do you usually protect your loan?
Do you register your private loan agreement as caveat on title?

You should register a second mortgage or at the very least a caveat.

That needs special language you can get from any savvy real estate lawyer.
