Housing shortage escaltes

Housing shortage escaltes
By Melissa Mangelsen
Journal Staff
It`s no doubt that housing in Nipawin has been tight, with people looking for homes and in an affordable price range.
Those who are coming to Nipawin are looking for a certain standard of housing, which is a pretty average standard.
"They want something that they don`t have to fix up right now, they want to just be able to move in," said Sherry Michalyca, economic development and promotions officer for the Town of Nipawin.

Public school division increases mill rate by 3.14%

Rising costs and some significant capital construction projects have led to a slight increase in the educational portion of the local mill rates, according to information released by the South East Cornerstone School Division last week. The division`s board of trustees increased their mill rate by .7 of a mill, bringing it from 22.3 to 23 mills for 2008, a hike of 3.14 per cent. That leaves the school division with one of the highest mill rates in the provnce but it sets the stage for $32 million in capital construction projects within the next year to three years including a major $17 million new school project in Oxbow and a possible $15 million renovation project for the Weyburn Comprehensive School.

Water program aimed at Southwest

Southwest producers can expect to receive some relief through the $6 million Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program (FRWIP) announced last Thursday by the provincial government.

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud said the program will cover three distinct needs in Southwest Saskatchewan - emergency water supplies for short term demands, permanent on-farm water supplies and the establishment of wells to serve farmers and ranchers over the long term.

Business is booming

COLONSAY -- Tyler and Terrilynn Young wanted it all.

Two years ago, they packed up their three kids and left Allan, 50 km southeast of Saskatoon, for the slightly larger town of Colonsay where they could make affordable plans to build a house and stay close to family.

They liked the lifestyle so much that they chose to live in this town 63 km east of Saskatoon, while Tyler works as a journeyman mechanic in the Drayton Valley, Alta. oilpatch, a seven-hour drive away.

City struggled to remove snow: report

Almost all Saskatoon homeowners know they have to clear their sidewalks of snow and ice 48 hours after a snowfall, but only three-quarters of the population consistently did so last winter, new data shows.

According to a Fast Consulting survey conducted on behalf of the City of Saskatoon, 93 per cent of city homeowners are aware that a bylaw revision approved by council last year requires residents to clear their sidewalks within 48 hours. The same survey reveals just 77 per cent of homeowners complied with the new bylaw revision all of the time last winter.

Ethanol plant still up in the air

Will it come, or won`t it?
That`s the question on the minds of residents of Birch Hills as Iogen Corporation seeks funding to build a celluloic ethanol plant in North America, especially since the company has not yet reached a decision about where it will build a plant.
According to news reports, the choice was between Idaho and Birch Hills.
"Iogen has suspended operations in Idaho," said company spokesperson Mandy Chepeka, adding that state "has tremendous potential for celluloic ethanol."
Chepeka said Iogen is currently in the due diligence stage of seeking funding, and Sustainable Development Technology Canada — a not-for-profit foundation that finances and supports the development of clean technologies providing solutions to climate change issues — will make a decision on the money after that phase.

Tenants ponder next move

The majority of senior tenants from an apartment building are trying to figure out where to move if the city gives the OK to the owner for condo conversion.

City council deferred a decision on the conversion of 70-27th Street, owned by Urban Elements from Saskatoon, based on concerns about potential hardship faced by tenants who still live there.

"I am very concerned," said one senior woman speaking on condition of protecting her anonymity.

City taxes to rise

Regina city council approved a 2.84 per cent property tax increase, down one percentage point from the previously proposed mill rate for the year.

Just weeks after receiving $1.348 million from the provincial government in additional revenue sharing dollars, councillors voted 9-to-2 in favour of putting the unexpected funding towards lowering the mill rate for Regina tax payers.

Pronto Airways takes flight to Nunavut destinations

Pronto Airways LP is flying where no Saskatoon airline has flown before, says a company executive.

As of Saturday, the Saskatoon-based company will offer weekly flights to Rankin Inlet and Baker Lake, Nunavut, in response to demand from mining and exploration companies, said Dennis Baranieski, Pronto`s vice-president of business development. He believes the airline is the first to provide direct scheduled service from Saskatchewan to Nunavut.

Millions for school upgrades

The Ministry of Education has earmarked more than $27 million in capital funding in next year`s budget for upgrades to three Regina public schools.

Douglas Park Elementary School, Arcola Community School and Campbell Collegiate were among seven projects approved in principle this year under a new government capital budgeting process.

As part of the announcement Education Minister Ken Krawetz committed a total of $60.3 million -- based on preliminary planning estimates -- in next year`s budget to pay for the province`s portion of the capital costs of these projects. The two Regina elementary schools will receive $8.6 million each and Campbell will get $10.25 million.

Feds delaying project: Fiacco

Just a day after voicing his ire at a one month delay in the IPSCO Place revitalization project, Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco said the federal government has now warned him that necessary funding may not flow until the fall.

"At the rate they`re going, we will take out a whole construction season. Unacceptable," a frustrated Fiacco said on Tuesday.

Sask. exports lead nation

Saskatchewan is bucking the national trend in export growth, with a 36.3-per-cent increase in exports in March 2008 over March 2007, compared with a 6.4-per-cent decline in Canadian exports during the same period.

With exports totaling $2.2 billion in March, the province saw the highest percentage increase in export trade in Canada, well ahead of Alberta, where exports increased 20.4 per cent over March 2007.

Cameco Q1 profit more than doubles

SASKATOON -- Cameco Corp. is working to recover from several operational setbacks in 2007, says president CEO Jerry Grandey, who points to first-quarter earnings as a sign of that renewal.

The Saskatoon-based resource company reported Tuesday its first-quarter net earnings in 2008 were up 125 per cent over the same period last year to $133 million, or 37 cents a diluted share, compared with $59 million, or 16 cents a share, in 2007.

New subdivision presents challenges

Saskatoon`s newest city within a city will come with three interchanges, five access points and its own 65-acre walkable wetlands.

Welcome to Rosewood, a future neighbourhood almost the size of North Battleford on the southeastern corner of Saskatoon. If it`s unique for its features, it also brings special challenges.
